 An SEO silo structure is a method of organizing website content in a way that groups related information together—both for users and search engines. Think of it as creating clear, vertical sections or “silos” on your site where each silo focuses on a specific topic or theme. This structure strengthens topical authority, improves internal linking, and helps boost search engine rankings.

Let’s dig into how a siloed approach can revolutionize your SEO game.


What is a Silo Structure in SEO?

A silo structure groups website content into clear categories or themes. Each main topic acts as a parent (like a pillar page or category), and within each silo, you have supporting pages or subtopics.

For example, on a digital marketing website:

  • Main silo topic: SEO

    • Subtopics: On-page SEO, Off-page SEO, Keyword Research, Link Building

  • Main silo topic: Social Media Marketing

    • Subtopics: Facebook Ads, Instagram Strategy, LinkedIn Marketing

Each of these groups is internally linked to establish a clear relationship between them. This helps both users and search engines understand what the site is about.

Google’s algorithm prioritizes relevance and structure. A silo makes it easier for:

  • Users to navigate your content

  • Search engines to crawl and index related pages

  • Your site to build authority around specific topics

There are two main types of silos: Physical and Virtual.

1. Physical Silos

These are based on your URL structure and site hierarchy.

Here, the URL path reflects the content hierarchy, clearly showing that “on-page” and “off-page” are part of the “SEO” silo.

2. Virtual Silos

These rely more on internal linking, not necessarily folder structures.

You could have pages like:



www.example.com/on-page-seo-guide/ www.example.com/off-page-strategies/

But through internal links and category tags, you connect them all back to a central SEO hub page.

Both structures are valid and can be used together depending on your CMS and website needs.

How to Build an SEO Silo Structure

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Identify Core Topics

These become your main silos. They should align with your business goals and what your audience is searching for.

Example:
If you run a fitness blog, your silos might be:

  • Weight Loss

  • Strength Training

  • Nutrition

  • Workouts at Home

Step 2: Plan Subtopics

Use keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or Ubersuggest to identify subtopics.

Under “Nutrition,” you might have:

  • Meal plans

  • Macronutrients

  • Healthy snacks

  • Keto vs. Paleo diets

Each subtopic will be a dedicated page or blog post.

Step 3: Create Content Hierarchically

Start with a pillar page that covers the main silo topic broadly. Then link it to detailed blog posts or pages (the subtopics).

Each supporting page links back to the main page and possibly to each other if relevant.
